Overview
Northern Health (NH) is a major health authority that provides essential services (including hospital care, mental health, and community care) to 26 communities across the vast area of nearly 600,000 square kilometers in northern British Columbia (BC).
The organization needed a comprehensive dual-resource system to support Emergency Department nursing education: the ED (Emergency Department) Education Framework and the CAPE (Competence Assessment, Planning, and Evaluation) tool. These resources would guide and standardize competency development for Registered Nurses (RN) across the Emergency Trauma and Transfer Service Network.
Problem
Existing materials were inconsistent, hard to navigate, and not designed with accessibility or inclusivity in mind. The challenge: create a clear, unified system that supports complex clinical content while reconciling strict colour-coded branding with Level AA accessibility and broader inclusive design requirements. The tools also had to work seamlessly in both digital and print environments.
Outcome
I led the design strategy, emphasizing inclusive design and clear Information Architecture while introducing a secondary colour-coding system that ensures accessibility without compromising brand identity.
The final deliverables included:
▪︎ An inclusive, interactive PDF with navigational elements optimized for digital use across NH’s network.
▪︎ A print-ready companion version designed for training environments with limited digital access.

▪︎ A print-ready companion version designed for training environments with limited digital access.
Together, these tools provided a standardized, intuitive, and accessible system for RN competency development across Northern Health’s Emergency Trauma and Transfer Service Network.
Impact
▪︎ Business and User Impact
The ED Education Framework aligns education with the national Canadian Degree Qualifications Framework, providing a guide for curriculum revision and supporting accreditation.
The CAPE Tool provides mentees and mentors a practical method for self-assessment, identifying knowledge gaps, and maintaining continuing competency.
